In May 2007 my brother, Michael Treinen, was
diagnosed with leukemia. He was 18 years old
and almost didn't make his high school
graduation, but he did! He went through all his
rounds of chemo inspiring people along the way.
Eventually in December he was cancer free.
Unfortunately 6 weeks later he received news
that his cancer has returned. This time chemo
couldn't just do it we need him to get a bone
marrow transplant. Unfortunately we found out
later that his insurance ran out. In just about a
week we raise about $900,000. Michael inspired
so many people and when he could he would
help coach our high schools hockey, boys and
girls lacrosse when he felt up to snuff. On May
24, 2008 he was the assistant coach of the year.
The saddest day of my life was the next. He
passed away about six in the morning when i
rushed to the hospital to see him. He struggled
for his life and fought to get his heart beat back
to normal for two hours but couldn't. He proved
to our town and more that one person can make
a huge difference. And like my sister stated at
his funeral, "Michael gave a face and a smile to
leukemia." Who?Mike T. |

Though cancer has its negative effects, in the long run it has been a blessing in regards to the way I live my daily life. I know that each day is a gift to be celebrated and I thank God for opening my eyes to all that is beautiful and good in this world.
